This title is the second of the two volumes based on papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Islamic Economics and Banking held at Loughborough University, UK, during August 13-15, 2000. The book highlights the Islamic approach towards poverty elimination and the role played by some built-in institutions of the Islamic system in this respect.

Papers included in the volume point out that Islamic institutions such as zakah, elimination of riba, anqaf, takaful, irfaq etc., play an important role in reducing poverty levels and improving income distribution. While each of these institutions can make a significant contribution towards the goal of poverty elimination, the combined impact of all will be much greater than their additive impact. The book presents both theoretical and empirical evidence to highlight the role of these important institutional arrangements in poverty elimination.
